Dear readers, would any of you like to either 1) tell me where to go fabric shopping in Portland, or 2) actually meet up in Portland for fabric shopping (or just talking about fabric and sewing, I'm not particular)? I'm hoping to find something with birds on it...
Let me back up a bit -- I've got a science teacher's conference next week on Oct. 24-25, but I've got Saturday morning and early afternoon (Oct. 26) free. I've never been to Portland before, but I've
Alternately, are any of you science teachers who are also going to this conference? Slim chance, but worth a shot.
At any rate, if you have shopping (and eating, although I'm not overly fond of pickles) recs, let me know, and if you want to hang out (pretty please? I promise I'm not an axe murderer!), shoot me an email at cationdesignsblog [at] gmail dot com.
"I promise I'm not an axe murderer" :-D That made me chuckle!
ReplyDeleteHave fun and hopefully you have lots of pretty goodies to showcase when you return!
Well I don't know about the crafty things since I'm a San Franciscan, but if I'm lucky enough to have Portland layover downtown the happy hour at Portland City Grill is great. It's the top of a 30 story building and has the most amazing views. And they serve food...
ReplyDeleteShoot! I'm tempted to drive down to Portland to hang out for the day. I wonder if we could get Sarai of Colette Patterns and Suzannah from Adventures in Dressmaking out to play?!
ReplyDeleteFabric Depot is a great store. Modern Domestic and the surrounding Alberta neighborhood is quintessential crafty atmosphere for Portland. Powells books is a must see for book lovers. Voodoo donuts is popular, but I'm partial to Cupcake Jones. Marinepolis Sushi Land is amazingly good for conveyor belt sushi. Ahh, I wish I could move back... Have fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, yes and yes! I second these suggestions! There is also "Bolt" fabrics just down the street from Modern Domestic. I think you should shoot the MD ladies an email, they would LOVE to meet you and talk shop, I guarantee!
DeleteMill End in Sellwood is also good! I live in SW PDX, moved from Culver City last year! :) I love it here.
If I had time for one thing, I would go to Modern Domestic and Bolt, and have lunch at the biscuit shop (on the same block on Alberta). This would be a quintessential PDX experience!
I would meet up with you, but my husband just had surgery and things are pretty up in the air right now. Enjoy your stay! MD and Bolt, trust me!!
Portland is wonderful! I lived there for six years a couple of years ago, and I still miss it. I second the quilted fox's recommendation of Fabric Depot (and Powell's - great selection of sewing books), and would add the Mill End Store. It might be a little bit hard to get to, but well worth it. Have a great time!
ReplyDeleteand don't forget Rose City Textiles for all the outdoor fabrics and habby. Had a great time at Fabric Depot, Mill End (too much came home) and Rose City Textiles when I was there in 2011. Have a great trip.
ReplyDeleteIf you go to Mill End, only go to the one in Sellwood. The store in Beaverton is cranky and musty.
ReplyDeleteArgh, how bad-lucky that you'll be in Portland at the exact time I'm in San Francisco. Boo.
ReplyDeleteBTW, did you see this on Colette?: http://www.coletterie.com/colette-patterns-news/portlanders-were-looking-for-some-seasonal-helpers-next-week?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+coletterie+%28Coletterie%29
ReplyDeleteI'd love to hang!! Someone get me a flight!!
ReplyDeleteHey just dropping in to let you know I made our fav pattern M5845 again, with slim skirt.. and OUTSIDE DARTS!! It's on my blog. Thought you would be interested since it's our pattern-baby :)
Powell's is a must! Do not skip going to Powell's!
ReplyDeleteOur wonderful apparel store, Josephine's, just closed last month. I second the recommendations for Modern Domestic and Fabric Depot, and also consider Cool Cottons on Hawthorne! They have some super cute cottons!
ReplyDeleteGah! Wish I could have driven down from Seattle! That would be so fun! Portland has better fabric shops than we do up here...
ReplyDeleteIf you get to Mill End in Sellwood, make sure you stop at the Pendleton Woolen Mill store as well. Beautiful selection!
