It's Just Further Evidence

Thank you all for your kind, encouraging, and accepting comments on my last post! I'll be honest, my heart was pounding just the tiniest bit when I clicked the "publish" button. Even though past posts have never been greeted with anything other than graciousness, it's always nerve-wracking sharing something so personal. I didn't expect such an outpouring of love in the comments, and I was so, so, touched by what you all shared in return. I really want to respond to each and every one of you, but it'll take me a while, so I just wanted to say a general (but still heartfelt) thank you first. You guys reaffirm my belief in the loveliness of the sewing blogger community!

Also, I appreciate all of the early birthday wishes, and I'm sorry if it was confusing, but my birthday's not until the first week of December. I will save your well-wishes for that day! And if any of you awesome, geeky sewasauruses out there are making hobbit costumes for the movie, well, we can do an unofficial sewalong and round-up and I will be so happy to know that there are other people out there getting dressed up with me!

You can bet I'll be posting here about the party details as I prep and craft, but this won't turn into a party prep blog by any means. Sewing is still my obsession -- not party planning. Also, in order to have those immaculately turned out themed birthday parties, I'm pretty sure one needs to have a gaggle of small adorable human beings in attendance. I've just got the one cat. He could give those SHBs a run for their money in adorable-ness, though.

Why am I covered with plush breakfast items? Since when are sushi and burnt turkey legs part of a second breakfast?

(And speaking of omphaloskepsis, I found this article fascinating. It's been a while since I did a link round-up, and now I'm trying to make up for missing three months' worth of links with an article about the bacteria in your bellybutton?!)

  1. Well birthday girl when I started to read your last blog I though OMG so on the spectrum! However, you need to know that every morning I log on just to check what you and Walnut (sorry Mr Cation) have been up to. Muppet and I love reading your adventures and adore your geek dresses. I am fascintated by the period costumes you make whilst Muppet is ever grateful that I don't dress her up! From the other side of the world you look amazing, a figure to die for, you look stunning in your creations and I love your imaginative approach to sewing. We all have things we hate about ourselves - this is coming from classic English pear shape - but you know what I would give anything to be as slim as you and look as amazing as you do in your creations. (My favourite is McCall's 5845 marine ecosystems dress, you look stunning in it). Muppet and I wish you a Happy Birthday for the 1st December,.

  2. P.S: The current series of Downtown Abbey finished last Sunday, sob sob. However, a new series of 'The Hour' is starting this week! I love it for the cute 1950s clothes and the HATS!!! Am thinking of wearing a hat and glove to work - my class will think I have finally gone bonkers!

    1. It's so unfair that we have to wait until January for Season 3! All of these pictures of new costumes are popping up online and I have no context for them!! I think you should totally do the hat+glove thing...my students already think I'm nuts, and I haven't even worn my marine ecosystems dress for them yet.

  3. Fascinating article on the belly button flora. It will be interesting to see what falls out of their research. Thank you for sharing the link!

    1. Glad someone else found it interesting! I never would have thought belly buttons were so interesting, but it makes sense that everyone would have different colonies.

  4. I totally missed commenting on your last post (you're just too prolific a blogger for my schedule sometimes!), but I wanted to echo everyone else in thanking you for such a brave and profound post. I also tend toward the awkward (though more of the constantly-embarrassing-myself variety), and I grew up wanting so badly to fit in and be liked by the group, so I always felt like I had to be with other people to define myself. What sewing has done for me is help me realise that I actually can really enjoy being by myself, and that I can feel proud of the talent I have rather than be sad about the talents I don't have. I'm also so thankful for this awesome community, and now it occurs to me that by embracing my alone time I have actually found the group I belong to and fit in with!
PS, if you want to have a real-life co-awkward hang-out, I'm in LA for work and am planning on visiting the infamous Michael Levine Loft on Tuesday afternoon...

    1. Booooo, I saw this comment too late! I hope you had so much fun at the Loft...how much longer will you be in LA for?

I'm sorry I post so much, I just have so many thoughts and feelings! ;) Haha but no, I think you're so right about the sewing helping us love the talents we have! I loved meeting you that one time in SF and didn't think you were awkward, at all!

    2. Boy, that place is nuts! Some good stuff, but my real scores were at the FIDM store! Thanks for the tips on both! I'm in the city through the weekend, but working til 6 every day... Drop me a line if you want at aleah42 at gmail.
Ditto on you not seeming awkward in person - maybe fabric stores de-awkward us? Though if you've ever seen me try to get a bolt of fabric off a high shelf...

  5. I didn't comment on your last post, it was all too quick for me, but I am an extreme introvert. I have always been socially awkward in situations that are not predictable, and I have only come to a comfort level with it toward the end of my life. I encourage everyone to do so earlier! It's OK not be a party animal! Introverts are far more likely to have those "flow" activities to enjoy. As to this post, thanks so much for the link to bellybutton cultures! Fascinating!

    1. Ooof, I hate those unpredictable situations. Thank you for sharing and affirming that it's okay to be introverted!

    1. Thanks, Amy! I'll be honest, I was super nervous about meeting you that time at the Canada College thing...I was afraid I would be either too awkward or too gushy!

  7. Thanks for the belly button bugs article! One of my oldest friends is a biomathematician doing her PhD but she is doing something far less exciting and now I am going to try to convince her to give up calcium for belly buttons.

Also, Walnut plus plush breakfast foods equals all kinds of adorable. Totally all you need for an immaculately turned out party.

    1. Yes, the more people studying bellybuttons, the better! I think that's way more interesting than calcium...

I think Walnut helps a lot with social gatherings when they're at our home...anytime I feel at a loss, I can just point to him and be like, "oooh look at the cute cat!!!"
