Walnut Expresses My Feelings For Me

Le sigh. I never asked to be adopted into a Giants household.

I've never been a fan of sports, mostly because of bad childhood memories of always being picked last for teams. To this day, I still can't catch a round object with any kind of reliability, and if you ask me to dribble a basketball, it will get away from me after two bounces. So imagine my horror when I discovered that Mr. Cation is a huge sports fan! I reluctantly resigned myself to having to learn something about 1) Notre Dame football, and 2) the SF Giants.

Wearing this cap is an insult to my dignity.

While I now know more about sports than I ever thought I would (and definitely more than anyone in my elementary school thought I ever would, I'm sure), I can still think of at least forty-two other things I'd rather be doing than watching ESPN. Seriously, during the fall the TV is always on on weekends because there's either a game, or highlights, or commentary to watch. This used to bug me when we first got married, but now that I sew...that just means I get five hours of uninterrupted sewing time to churn things out.

Wait, what did you say the final score was tonight? We're going to the World Series, you say?

So when I found out that the Giants winning the pennant means that there will be at least another four games to occupy my husband, I cheered.

Reaching up for a double high five?

What does your significant other do while you sew?

  1. Hee hee...love the Walnut shots and commentary! And while I currently have no significant other (except for, perhaps, my own 4 legged furries), I'm delighted to be sewing while any major games are on...and I'm delighted to hear that the Giants will be in the Super Bowl!

Is it possible to call yourself a Giants fan even if you've never watched a game?

    1. Ummmmm....I knew better than to call the World Series the Super Bowl. Really, I did. Honest.

I guess I've totally lost any credibility in the Giants fan department.

    2. LOLOL. JillyBe, this cracked me up! I don't watch sports and don't have a SO, but I do know that the Superbowl is for football - I watch it for the half tiem show and the ads. LOL. I did forget the name of the World Series, I admit sheepishly.

Cute kitty cat, Cation! Interesting to see that giants hats come in his size...

    3. Hahaha I totally have made that mistake before, Jilly Be!

Shams, that hat is actually a promotional ice cream bowl from Baskin Robbins that we only bring out for occasions like this...

  2. My husband also watches sports all the time. Only mine likes Football, Basketball, golf, etc.....

So I do other things like sewing and knitting and he says I'm ignoring him :)

    1. My husband will watch sports he's not particularly interested in, so I do see some golf and basketball occasionally, even poker! Seriously, how is that on ESPN?

  3. Mine plays video games, or sleeps because we're on opposite schedule. Me nights, him days. It makes me have a sad. :(

    1. Awww, that's hard, to have flipped schedules with your loved one...here's to hoping you get some quality time together soon!

  4. Mine plays video games, whether I'm sewing or not! ;)

    1. Haha same here! Call of Duty is his go-to destressing activity, so there are always guns in the background!

  5. he watches football (well you would call it soccer) and surfs moutain biking forums online.

  6. Mine looks at me with a mixture of confusion, bemusement and frustration... because I have to sew on our dining table- which is also in our kitchen and our lounge room- because we live in a small apartment, and that's all the space I have... SO our lounge is forever filled with bits of fabric, scraps of thread, balls of yarn and half finished crafty projects of varying sizes... If only I had a sewing room *sighs wistfully*

    2. That used to be me, and then we moved and I had a second bedroom to take over...hope that happens for you one day!

  7. Nawww! Walnut's indifference is totes adorbs! When I'm sewing husband is playing online video games. I think he likes to get most of his game time in then because he knows if I log on I'll kick his butt *teehee*

    1. That's so awesome, Amanda! Good thing you have sewing so that he can keep his high scores! ;)

  8. He watches Tv of course, specifically football and movies, which I totally encourage, otherwise how would I get any work done?

  12. YAY WALNUT! OMG he looks SOOO CUTE in that little hat! Hahaha!! We are hockey fans here, of course, being Canadian, but I have my sewing area set up in the living area, so I can listen and sew and the mister doesn't interrupt ^__^ However, as there's no hockey this season because of the lockout, it's a lot harder to find ways to entertain him for long stretches of time LOL. We are both gamers though so that helps ^__^

    1. Ah, yes, I hear hockey is a big thing up there :) That sounds like a good setup, and I feel you with the lockout as that was a problem last year with the NBA!

  13. Yes!! Things are exactly the same in my house! Mr Almondrock watches football, F1, cricket, golf and basketball. Occasionally rugby. And lets not forget Olympics. And then sports related computer games!

This supplies me with endless sewing time.
But when I say, "no sewing and sport on Wednesdays" we generally stick to it and spend time together :-)

    1. Hmmm, I might have to institute a no sewing and sports day...that seems healthy, although I don't want to give up sewing for a day!

  14. Ah aren't sports the BEST?! I used to lament Sunday Monday Thursday and sometimes Saturday football, now I'm right in line with you. And, because I'm enjoying my time, I actually love the Steelers as a team now. May the Giants get into a tie game situation, my friend.

    1. The Steelers bit I totally second! But at my household it's the wife, who wants to watch some football, while husband has a bit of uninterrupted quality time with Minecraft. Well, except for me cheering og swearing loudly. Goes well with a bit of knitting, tho :-)
      Sewingtime is for other days

  15. The first "Superbowl" comment on this post is hilarious... you're adorable, Jilly Be.

Cindy, sometimes I relate to you so much. Between your geekery and now your confession about being chosen last for sports, well, you're probably one of the sewing bloggers I relate to most. Plus, your Bay Area connection.

I went to SFSU, so go Giants! Even though I grew up in Alameda County and should technically be an A's fan. Still, I'm terrible with sports, which is not good for me as a newscaster. I'm like the "boom goes the dynamite" guy when I'm reading sports on the air.

    1. Oh Elisha, I'm so glad to know that someone else is always chosen last for sports teams! And technically, since my husband grew up in the East Bay, he should also be an A's and Raiders fan, but no, he's a Giants and 49ers fan...go figure!

  16. I was so happy the day my Hubby got his super-nerd computer set back again after we moved house - now he goes off into game-land and I can sew with absolutely no guilt ;)

  17. I'll tell you a little secret... I'm actually a bit of a jock and a huge sports fan myself! But I'm a fidgety, energetic type, so I love multitasking when games are on. I feel kinda guilty sewing when Man Friend is home, so I get lots done on Saturday nights when he plays hockey.

    1. That doesn't have to be a secret -- I think that's awesome! I'm totally with you on needing to multitask, though...when we were watching the Giants game I was sewing buttons onto a shirt, but that made me keep missing the critical moments.

  18. Urgh sports. I hate competitive sports. I was always picked second last at primary (elementary) school sports - the kid that was picked last was the kid every one teased about picking his nose :(

When ever we had train and try out "cross country marathons" I used to walk it, then lightly jog when a teacher ran by.

During high school I used to forged notes to get out of Physical Ed. I always had a sore ankle, period pain or a cold.

    1. Thanks for sharing in my sports embarrassment, Neeno! I always tried to get out of PE whenever I could, too! Thank goodness we never had cross-country marathons!

  19. Uh oh, gender stereotype alert. Women sewing clothes while the men lounge on the couch watching sports?!?! I'm obsessed with basketball so in the winter and spring that's usually what I have on in the background while I stitch together all my little frocks and such. Obviously I'm super progressive.......

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hahaha love your progressiveness, Andrea! I know, sometimes the feminist in me feels bad that I'm succumbing to stereotyping, then I remember that I'm the one that got Mr. Cation into D&D and sci-fi, and then I feel better :)

  20. My boyfriend doesn't live with me, but he stays at my place half the week. Previously I haven't been sewing or crafting much when he's down, because I don't see him that much so we veg on the couch watching adventure time, or similar. But we've got a bit of a better balance at the moment. The last two weekends, he set himself up on my computer desk and gamed while I sewed, and we listened to podcasts together. It was social introvert crafter BLISS!

  21. We are baseball fans around here! It's fun to listen to Mr. Savory and MY mom talk trash when their respective teams play each other. :) Outside of baseball season, there are many hobbies to distract around here. He plays musical instruments, builds robots... We have fun. GO GIANTS!!

    1. Go Giants, indeed! And how awesome that your S.O. does robotics!

  22. Wanna trade? Your DH could be into cricket - the bloody stuff goes on for DAYS. And it's so bad that the crowd watching it will start chanting 'Boring' for hours. I'd be enthusiastic about free sewing time except that I can hear the "Boooooooring, boooooring, booooring" as I sew. Very offputing.

And he also likes Rugby League, Rugby Union, and the occasional basketball and soccer. Sometimes I even catch him watching netball. :-P

    1. Ouch, cricket sounds painful...I guess I'm lucky that it's mostly just baseball and football here!

  23. Mine watches sport too - rugby (his favourite), cycling, grand prix and football (real, English football I mean...!) but he also likes to carve wood into lovely, small sculptures. Sometimes we have craft afternoons together where he carves and sands and I sew. Is that lovey-dovey or just sad and getting-near-to-middle-agedness? (We think it's fab!)

  24. Last year he was playing his bass guitar while I was knitting. This year he is painting while I'm sewing. It's nice to be doing creative work next to each other at the same time.
